Herndon Residents Save a Life, Get Honored by the City

HERNDON, VA — Three Herndon citizens were honored this week after they saved a man who they found lying face down on the sidewalk during a torrential rain storm. Rick Reynolds, Kris Savage and Katie Simpson -- three people who didn't even know each other before that rainy June day -- were awarded Responsible Citizen Awards during the Sept. 13 town council meeting.

It all happened on June 21 during a rain storm. The three of them "came upon a stranger lying face down on the sidewalk in the 200 block of Herndon parkway," the Herndon Police Department said in a statement on its Facebook page.

"What made these three unique that night was not only that they decided to stop and get involved, but also that they worked together to help save a man’s life," the statement reads. "The man who was lying face down was unconscious, and, it turned out, in need of life-saving CPR. Rick Reynolds, Kris Savage, and Katie Simpson called 9-1-1, provided the emergency call-taker with their location, and information concerning the man’s physical status.

"Then, following the call-taker’s directions, they provided CPR until EMS arrived on-scene and were able to take over," the statement continued. "Once at the hospital the man was stabilized, and eventually went on to make a full recovery."

It was their quick thinking and actions that helped the stranger, Agostino Tarantino, survive the ordeal. Tarantino himself was in attendance at the ceremony, making the event extra special.
