The crew consisted of six scouts and three adults, who set out with their backpacks on Saturday, August 8 at the 200 square-mile Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, New Mexico. Their trek included summiting the 10,880-foot tall Black Mountain, as well as help constructing a new hiking trail. The scouts also did rock climbing, 12-gauge shotgun shooting, black powder muzzle loader rifle shooting, blacksmithing and several other activities.
Troop 913 is chartered by St. Joseph’s Church in Herndon, and is one of hundreds of scouting units serving boys aged 6-21 and girls aged 14-21 throughout Fairfax County (three divisions of scouting are co-ed).
