Herndon Snow Alert: Here's When You Could See Some

Yes, it is reaching into the 50s and even 60s on Thursday and Friday in our area, but it is still January, so that was never likely to stick around. And as it turns out, an Arctic blast is on the way that increases our chances for some snow in the coming days.

Mike Thomas, meteorologist for Fox 5, tweeted that we may get a snow appetizer Friday night and into pre-dawn hours on Saturday, with some rain transitioning to a mix of snow in some suburbs of D.C.

Saturday is the day that the Arctic air starts swooping into our area, so expect temperatures to plunge into the teens at night and rise to no more than around freezing during the day for most of next week. And with a clipper headed our way on Tuesday, that could mean some real snow.

Thomas said that Tuesday and Wednesday offered the best chance for some snowfall in our area, although right now we're looking at light snow showers rather than a real blizzard, but that could change as the storm develops.

This month was forecast to be particularly heavy for snow by local meteorologists. The D.C. area only got 3.4 inches of snow last winter, but most forecasters were calling for double-digit snowfall, ranging from 10 inches to more than 20 inches. With January predicted to be the coldest month this winter, it will provide us with the best opportunities for snow.
