Hornet Wrestling Announces 2014-15 Schedule

Herndon opens season with Tuscorara Duals on Dec. 6

Herndon head coach Mike Gonzales has announced the 2014-15 wrestling schedule, his ninth year at the helm of the program.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season,” said Gonzales. “Our schedule features some tough tournaments in the DMV area. Additionally, we have a dual schedule that will allow us to see some of the best teams in the Maryland and Virginia.”

“Our goal every year is to prepare our wrestlers to be conference/region champions and to be All-State. Hopefully, the competition we will face this season will achieve that.”

The Hornets open its campaign on the road at the Tuscorara Duals at Tuscorara HS in Leesburg on December 6. This will be followed by their home opener against cross-town rival, South Lakes, on Wednesday, December 10.

Herndon will then head over to the Sterling Lions Invitational at nearby Park View HS on December 13, to take own some Loudoun County schools. Last season, the Hornets took home the 3rd place trophy and look to improve on that finish this season.

The next weekend, the Hornets travel south to compete in the Lions Rotational at Tallwood HS in Virginia Beach. Herndon will face some of the top teams in the Hampton Roads area, including Princess Anne, who are ranked 3rd in the 5A state pre-season rankings, and are the top-rated team from the beach area.

The Hornets will stay busy during the winter break, as they travel north to Gaithersburg, Md, to compete in the Cougar Claus Holiday Duals at Quince Orchard HS. Herndon placed 3rd in last year’s competition. They will see some of the top schools from Montgomery County, as well as private school power, Paul VI.

Herndon will ring in the new year in southern Maryland, wrestling in the Patriot Classic Tournament at Northern HS in Owings, Md. The Hornets had a strong showing last year, placing 6th out of 24 teams, with four finalists, and one individual champion.

In conference duals meets, Herndon will face Chantilly and Robinson (1/14) at Robinson, will entertain Oakton and Westfield at home (1/28), before facing Centreville at the Wildcat Duals (1/31).

Meanwhile, Herndon will head to a pair of tournaments in the area, the Panther Invitational at Paint Branch HS in Burtonsville, MD (1/16-17) and the Wolverine Duals at North Stafford HS (1/24).

The Conference 5 championships will be held February 6th at Westfield HS, followed by the 6A North Region championships at Centreville HS Feb. 13-14. The 6A State Championships take place at Robinson SS February 21-22.
