Hornets Storm Past Seahawks, 60-3

Dec 10- The Herndon wrestling team rolled past cross-town rival South Lakes 60-3 Wednesday night in front of a packed house at Lou Pukal Gymnasium. Herndon won eight of the nine bouts wrestled to improve to a 2-4 overall record.

After Herndon and South Lakes both gave up forfeits at 106 and 113 pounds to start the match, Bo Shull got things off to a great start at 120 pounds. The senior got an early takedown to take a 2-0 lead in the first period. He rode his opponent the entire 2nd period, before extending his lead with a reversal in the 3rd period to win the match 4-0 over South Lakes’ Dylan Suzuki.
Jacob Moberly was able to control the action at 126 pounds, earning a 3rd period fall over Seahawk Anthony Garza. Andre Johnson and Danny Walter received forfeits at 132 and 138 pounds. H.T. Elston, Herndon’s starter at 138 pounds, bumped up to 145 pounds, and was able to take down Joseph Letteri to his back to pick up an exciting first period pin.

At 152 pounds, Marshall Kurtz scored several sets of back points, before pinning Thomas Miller in the 3rd period. Sam Milligan put in a dominating performance at 160 pounds, earning a 17-2 technical fall over South Lakes wrestler Kareem McCoy.
Nate Shirey rolled to a 13-2 major decision over Jason Bruno at 182 pounds. Shirey scored a 2-point reversal and two sets of back points in the 3rd period to take control of a close match. Jonah Poulson received a forfeit at 195 pounds.
Arbaz Hussain extended his winning streak to 6-0 with a second period pin over Gabriel O’Donnell. Hussain went 5-0 the previous weekend at Tuscorara High School, earning four pins and one technical fall.
South Lakes finally got on the board at heavyweight as Theodore Silvester won a triple overtime thriller over Quadel Corbett. Silvester was awarded a penalty point as Corbett was called for locking hands, and then scored a late escape in the third overtime to seal the tight 6-4 victory, avoiding the shut out for the Seahawks.
“We put in a great effort. It was senior night against our rivals at home. Our guys knew the situation and responded,” Coach Mike Gonzales said about his team’s performance.
Herndon will be back in action on Saturday at the Sterling Lions Invitational at Park View HS. The Hornets placed 3rd in the 12-team event last season. Wrestling starts at 10am.
