How to Take Care of Your Granite Countertops

Your new granite countertops can withstand a lot, it's still important to care for them properly.

Granite countertops are durable, visually appealing and easy to maintain—which is why they’re also a popular choice for kitchen remodels. However, even though your new granite countertops can withstand a lot, it’s still important to care for them properly so they can stay looking like new for as long as possible.

Here are eight things you can do to treat your granite countertops well:

1. Use a soft cloth with warm water and mild dish soap to thoroughly wipe down your countertops daily.

2. Steer clear of commercial cleaners and use only soap and water for cleaning and a vinegar solution for smudges.

3. However, if you notice too many fingerprints, you can apply a light layer of furniture polish.

4. Avoid setting hot items on countertop seams.

5. Check your sealant every few years and be prepared to reapply after the first few years of use. To test if your sealant is still effective, you can drip a few drops of water on the counter and see if the water absorbs. However, keep in mind that you may just need to reseal certain problem areas, as opposed to the whole countertop.

6. Store items that could potentially rust—like cans of cooking spray—away from your countertops to avoid the potential for stains.

7. However, if you do get a stain on your granite countertops, you can treat it with a paste made of 90 percent pool filter powder (diatomaceous earth) and 10 percent Hydrogen Peroxide. Apply the paste to the stain and cover it with plastic wrap to let sit overnight.

8. Remove and diamond rings or bracelets before cleaning your countertops to avoid the potential for scratches.

By keeping these eight tips in mind, you can enjoy your granite countertops for many, many years to come.
