Huge Storm Is About To Pound Herndon

A Nor'easter is forming and is headed in our direction this weekend.

UPDATE SATURDAY, 10/28: The powerful storm making its way up the East Coast could make landfall with winds equivalent to up to a Category 1 hurricane, according to the Capital Weather Gang. While most of the punishment will be on the New England coast, we're expected to get swiped by the storm Sunday morning and into the evening, with the worst coming in the PM hours for the D.C. area. Forecasters believe we could get about two inches of rain, and there is also a strong possibility of power outages and downed trees due to strong winds, so be careful.

Torrential rain and damaging winds are expected to roll through the Mid-Atlantic, hitting New England the hardest. The storm's lowest pressure will fall more than 24 millibars in just a day's time on Sunday, dipping to 979 millibars in what is known as a "meteorological bomb." Even worse, a storm in the Caribbean that could become Tropical Storm Philippe is expected to get sucked into the storm, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

How bad are we going to get hit? Well, that depends. We aren't in the direct path of the storm, but the D.C. region should still get at least one period of heavy rain early Sunday.

The rain will most likely start for our area after midnight on Sunday and it could get pretty heavy by Sunday morning. It could continue to rain into the afternoon, depending on what the storm does. If it strengthens and gets closer, it could continue to rain into Sunday evening. If not, showers could end by the early afternoon.

After that, even if we don't get a lot of rain, we're going to get some wind. You can expect gusts of over 35 miles per hour Sunday night and into Monday morning, CWG reports. So it's going to start wet, and then get very windy as the weekend drags on.
