Hurricane Irma Herndon Update: Good Chance Of Direct Hit, But Track Could Shift West

The models suggests that Irma could slam into the Carolinas and then head toward D.C., but there's a good chance she'll shift west.

HERNDON, VA — Hurricane Irma has been pounding the Caribbean lately and is barreling toward the coast of Florida, after which it is expected to suddenly veer north along the coast. And while projections currently predict the storm is most likely to move into Georgia and miss the Herndon area, several possible paths still have it slamming into our region.

The Capital Weather Gang posted a graphic (embedded below) depicting the many possible paths of Irma as predicted by the Global Forecasting System and the Euro model. Multiple paths have Irma headed for D.C., but most of them show the storm headed for the Midwest after fully entering the United States mainland on the Georgia coast, so we may be spared her wrath.

At the very least, our region is generally protected from hurricane-strength winds due to the fact that we have a barrier in the Carolinas preventing storms from hitting us full force. If Irma does hit the D.C. area, it would likely have weakened significantly to a tropical storm or even just a tropical depression.
