Kickstarter: The Imagineers + Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers

Singer-songwriter Crys Matthews has just launched a Kickstarter to release a full-length CD and an EP.

"I sing and write songs—love songs, life songs, songs about getting through life whole enough to want to love and be loved," Matthews says.

"Producing an album is an expensive undertaking, but producing two projects simultaneously... well, you can just imagine," Matthews says. "Imagine a massive Star Wars–type scrolling list of the various expenses: studio time, paying the producer and engineer, having both projects mixed and mastered, paying the musicians, paying the designers, paying the replicators to have it packed and shipped, paying to have it publicized so we're not the only ones who know how awesome this music is, etc."

In 2016, Matthews wrote a song called The Imagineers and entered it into NPR's Tiny Desk Contest. It didn't win, but it got referred to as "the unofficial anthem of the Tiny Desk Contest." It's a song about not ever giving up on your dreams. It says, "We are Imagineers, the ones who still believe in magic, the ones who rise above our fears." Matthews knew the song was something special and that it would be the title track for her next release. Every other song on this album has that same theme of determination and hope.

"What I didn't expect," Matthews says, "was to write another song for this year's Tiny Desk Contest that was just as special." Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers (you can hear a live version here: ) follows the folk tradition of music as social commentary, as do the other songs on the EP. One of Mathews' favorite lines from the title track says, "So don't let four years change your heart. We were not born hating each other — now is not the time to start." Bob Dylan was right when he said, "the times they are a-changin'," and that's why these songs cannot wait.
