Labor Day 2018 In Herndon: What's Open, What's Closed

It's the unofficial start of fall. Here's what to expect as far as what will be closed in the area on Labor Day.

HERNDON, VA -- Schools are opening, you're not supposed to wear white anymore, and fall is just around the corner: it must be Labor Day.

Labor Day is a federal holiday always celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is intended to honor the American labor movement and the contributions workers have made to this country. Labor Day was started in the late 19th century, promoted by unions which organized the first parade in New York City.

Labor Day means lots of closures in our area, but some places will be open. Here's what you can expect for Herndon:

Fairfax County Offices: Closed on Labor Day.

Town of Herndon Offices: Closed on Labor Day.

State Offices: Commonwealth of Virginia offices in Fairfax County will be closed on Labor Day, including Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Labor Day.

Fairfax County Community Centers: Closed on Labor Day.

Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule on Labor Day. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connecto... for more information. Fastran will not operate on Labor Day.

Fairfax County Libraries: Closed on Labor Day.

Metrorail: The system will be open 8 a.m.-11 p.m. and operate on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day. See track work that may cause delays during the weekend.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule. See bus timetables.

McLean Community Center: Closed on Labor Day.

Parking: Parking is free at park and ride locations and Metro parking lots.

Parks: Parks will be open on limited hours in some cases. For more information, visit fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/holiday-hours.

Recreation Centers: All recreation centers are open at the regular time to 6 p.m. except George Washington RECenter, which is closed.

Recycling: I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) and I-95 Landfill (9850 Furnace Road, Lorton) are open on Labor Day.

Trash and Recycling: Contact individual Fairfax County and private service providers for holiday hours.

Here's a statement from the Town of Herndon on what to expect in Herndon itself:

Refuse Collection

No refuse will be collected on Monday, September 3. Refuse normally collected on Monday will be collected on Tuesday, September 4.

Herndon Centennial Golf Course

Open 6:30am – dark

Herndon Community Center

Community center closed August 26, 6pm – September 3 for annual cleaning and maintenance.

Offices open August 27 – September 1, 8am – 5:30pm, for registration and customer services.

Restroom facilities at Haley Smith and Bready parks will close at 5 pm.

Pool and hot tub (only) closed Friday, August 24, 6pm – Monday, September 3 for repairs.

Community center facilities reopen on Tuesday, September 4 at 6am.

Herndon Labor Day Festival, Town Green
