Last Chance For Snow In Herndon: What's Coming

With warm weather and March around the corner, it may feel like spring, but winter may have one last gasp for us.

HERNDON, VA -- It sure is nice walking around Herndon these days. One might even be tempted to think winter is over here. But not so fast.

The Weather Channel's forecast for our area suggests that we won't get any really cold weather for the next couple weeks, although highs could drop into the high 40s a couple times. But things could take a turn in the middle of the month, according to a longer-range forecast from the Farmer's Almanac.

The Farmer's Almanac says that from March 11-15, temperatures could dip and we may even see snow showers, although it may just as easily end up as rain.

Of course, you'll need to take that with a grain of salt, as specific forecasts that far out are notoriously unreliable. But it shows that winter isn't necessarily over yet for our area.

January and February are, by far, the heaviest snow months in the D.C. area, with an average of 6.2 and 6.3 inches respectively, according to the National Weather Service. December is third with 3.1 inches. And March is fourth with 1.6 inches. So, on average, we do see snow in March. But this has been far from an average winter for snow in this area.

The D.C. area has gotten just 3.3 inches of snow so far this winter (about twice that around Dulles Airport), which is about 10 inches below what we typically get by this time.

But when it comes to winter weather, things can change in an instant in March. So keep an eye on the forecast the next couple weeks, and don't put away those winter clothes just yet.
