HERNDON, VA — A man who police say fired a gun into the air outside a Fairfax County elementary school on Sunday faces multiple firearm charges, according to a police release.

Fairfax County police officers responded around 4:09 p.m., on Sunday to Hutchison Elementary School after receiving reports that a man had fired shots into the air, according to a briefing given by Lt. Dan Spital, of FCPD's public affair's office.

"When our officers arrived on scene, there were a group of males behind the school," he said. "When they saw officers, one of the men fled on foot behind the school, through a wooded area, and onto the Dulles Toll Road. Once that man got onto the Dulles Toll Road, he was struck by a vehicle."

The man was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries, according to Spinal. The driver of the striking vehicle remained on the scene.

Although police do not believe that speed or alcohol were factors for the driver of the striking vehicle, alcohol appeared to be a factor for the victim of the crash.

"Our officers combed the area and our canine officers located a firearm in the woods along the path that this individual took," Spital said.

On Tuesday, police obtained warrants for felony reckless discharge of a firearm with 1,000 feet of a school and possessing a firearm on school grounds agains the man in the hospital, according to a blog post.

Investigators from FCPD's Internal Affairs Bureau visited the scene of the crash on Sunday and are conducting an administrative investigation, according to a blog post.
