Paintings Inspired by Andean Culture on Exhibit at ArtSpace Herndon

ArtSpace's newest exhibit features the work of Fabricio Lara, whose paintings depict modern interpretations of ancient art painted on cave walls.

The walls of came to life as Fabricio Lara's newest exhibit, Mas Alla De Las Cavernas, or Beyond the Caves, opened today. 

Lara is recognized internationally for his paintings and murals, many of which include his contemporary interpretations of ancient Andean civilization.

A leading abstract painter in South America, Lara has said he is inspired by the images that were painted by his ancient ancestors in caves in Bolivia, Peru and Argentina.

The solo exhibit includes many new works that Lara painted in his studio in La Paz, Bolivia as well as some he painted as part of his artist’s residency at ArtSpace Herndon.

Lara, who began painting when he was young, is the son of renowned artist and sculptor Gustavo Lara. His father and uncles are all artists and formed a studio where the whole family gathered to create art.

Fabricio Lara works with ceramics and sculpture along with acrylic paints. He has a degree in fine arts from the Major University of San Andres in La Paz and taught other artists at his alma mater after he graduated.

Fabricio Lara has had his work displayed at galleries in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New York, London, Buenos Aries and Havana among other cities around the world. He has won more than 20 first prizes for his art.

An opening reception for Mas Alla De Las Cavernas will take place Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center St. The evening will include light refreshments and a talk by the artist as he introduces his works to the public. The reception is free and open to the public.

Mas Alla De Las Cavernas will be on exhibit through the first week of July. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
