The Herndon High School Marching Band (The Pride of Herndon) has been invited to represent the United States at the 75th Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France in June 2019. The Pride of Herndon will be honoring WWII servicemen and women, our veterans, active duty military and their families.
As they march, they will also pay special tribute to the brave men of the USS Herndon, the destroyer that led the Allied naval armada in the assault on German-occupied France. The ship was named for Commander William Lewis Herndon, after whom the Town of Herndon, VA is also named. Each member of the band will carry a photograph of a USS Herndon crewmember or WWII veteran.
The Pride of Herndon will play at the American Cemeteries in Brittany and at Omaha Beach, as well as in the D-Day Musical Salute to Liberation. World leaders and hundreds of thousands of local and international attendees will join in honoring the men who died on that fateful day and pay tribute to the remaining survivors.
This endeavor involves significant costs including lodging, airfare, and the expense of shipping band instruments and uniforms. To ensure all students will be able to participate, regardless of financial circumstances, the Herndon High School Marching Band is turning to the community and businesses to help fundraise. Several exciting community events have been planned.
On Saturday May 5th, 2018 the Herndon High School Band Parents Association is sponsoring a free rock concert at 5:30 pm on the Herndon Town Green featuring the band “The 5:55” and other attractions. Everyone is invited to join this free rock concert and celebrate.
