Police Body Cameras Coming to Herndon Soon: Report

Fairfax County is lagging behind the rest of the area, but a pilot program for body-worn cameras should begin by year's end.

HERNDON, VA — County police in Herndon and the rest of Fairfax County will start testing body-worn cameras later this year once the Board of Supervisors approves a set of guidelines governing their use, according to a report.

WTOP reports that the board must determine when cameras can be turned on and off and how to protect the privacy of all parties involved, as well as how long a video should be kept on file before it is destroyed.

Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler said that the pilot project could start as soon as July, but possibly after Labor Day, according to the report.

The pilot program should take 90 days or more once the body-worn camera policy is set in stone.

Fairfax County is a bit behind the rest of the area in terms of body cameras. Police officers in D.C., Arlington and elsewhere are already using them. A total of $1.9 million has been set aside for launching the program.
