Scorching Heat Is Coming | Herndon Weekly Forecast

The area is about to get slammed by a heat wave that will send the heat index into the 100s.

HERNDON, VA -- The heat is on, Herndon residents. The hottest weather of the year is descending on our region starting Monday, and while we'll get a little bit of relief after Tuesday, there's no mistaking summer's imminent arrival.

Temperatures will soar into the high 90s today, with humidity making it feel like the mid-100s. Tuesday will be pretty similar, until a cold front rolls in later that day with showers and storms that will cool us down into the lower 90s and the 80s for the rest of the week.

That front also means that storms are possible throughout the week after Tuesday, particularly late in the day.

Records could be broken on Monday. Our area is well within range to knock off the mark of 97 set back in 1944. By mid to late afternoon it will feel the worst, so if you have to be out and about, take precautions to keep cool and stay hydrated.

Don't underestimate the risks posed by excessive heat, warns the National Weather Service.

"North American summers are hot. Sometimes spring and fall temperatures reach dangerous levels as well," the NWS website states. "Most summers see heat waves in one or more parts of the United States. Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year and even more heat-related illnesses.

"During extremely hot and humid weather, your body's ability to cool itself is challenged," NWS adds. "When the body heats too rapidly to cool itself properly, or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, body temperature rises and you or someone you care about may experience a heat-related illness. It is important to know the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate responses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides a list of warning signs and symptoms of heat illness, and recommended first aid steps. Some of these symptoms and steps are listed below.
