'Sliver' of Herndon Now in Loudoun County
Herndon and Loudon County filed a joint petition for the town to take on 2.5 acres of land in Loudon County, now being used for storage.

The town of Herndon never went anywhere, but it now belongs to two different counties after a recent town expansion.
As of Aug. 31, the western boundary line of the town was formally adjusted to incorporate 2.4 acres of land in Loudon County into the town. This expansion did not compromise the existing 4.25 square miles of the town located in Fairfax County, the town confirmed this week.
The new boundaries were determined by a special court appointed by the Virginia Supreme Court. That special court was the result of a joint petition filed by both the town of Herndon and Loudoun County.

Herndon’s new western boundary lies at the eastern line of Rock Hill Road, off of Route 606. However, the land is not zoned for residential use and is currently being used by the town for storage and public works facilities. The expansion should not have an immediate impact for the town, but it does allow for the town to oversee the use of the new land.
“The Town of Herndon has always been, and will continue to be, located in Fairfax County,” Mayor Lisa Merkel said in a recent town news release. “The decision of the court, which the town and Loudoun County worked together to petition, simply clarifies the town’s ability to appropriately use land within our boundary. We greatly appreciate Loudoun County’s collaboration with us on this petition and their general cooperative spirit as our immediate western neighbor.”
