Spreading Love in Herndon

Herndon Village Networks surprises senior citizens with care packages.

Herndon Village Network (HVN) made February extra special for many senior citizens in the Herndon area. Ahead of the St. Valentine’s Day holiday, the nonprofit surprised its members with fun care packages that provided stimulating brain activities and other products to make their days brighter. The project was all part of HVN’s philosophy of neighbors helping neighbors.

“We loved being able to surprise our senior citizen neighbors with these gifts,” shared HVN President Penny Halpern. “While the care packages contained helpful and fun items, they really gave us a great excuse to visit with seniors during the cold winter month. That made the biggest impact.”

HVN maintains connections with over 100 senior citizens in the Herndon area and offers them a full range of experiences, from learning how to navigate age-related issues or new technology to attending concerts and theater productions. HVN, however, is best known for its friendly volunteer drivers who provide seniors with unlimited, free transportation. This more organized concept of neighbors helping neighbors encourages older residents to age in the Herndon community and allows them to maintain established routines and connections, which results in a higher quality of life. Since its beginning in 2015, HVN and its wonderful volunteer drivers have provided thousands of rides to doctor appointments, grocery stores, social engagements, and more!
