Herndon Man, 66, Charged In Armed Barricade, Abduction: Police

A man who was involved in a 12-hour standoff with police at a Herndon home surrendered peacefully on Wednesday morning.

HERNDON, VA — Town of Herndon Police identified 66-year-old Paul Graves of Herndon as the man who barricaded himself inside a townhouse and held a person hostage on Tuesday night, according to a release.

Graves surrendered to police peacefully on Wednesday morning after a nearly 12-hour standoff.

Police responded around 9:17 p.m., on Tuesday, for the report of a weapons violation in a townhouse located in the 700 block of Hemlock Court.

"Someone in the home heard gunshots in the house," said Lisa Herndon, an HPD public information officer. The caller told police that someone else in the home had fired a gun.

The situation quickly turned into a hostage and barricade situation, according to the release. The hostage was able to free themself from the home and was unharmed. Graves surrendered to police at 8:47 a.m. on Wednesday.

There were unconfirmed reports of other gunshots being fired in the home throughout the evening, but Herndon said no one was hurt from any gunshots.

Police transported Graves to Reston Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries that did not occur durning the incident, according to police.

Once Graves was released from the hospital, he was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he was cited on three felony charges, one for abduction, one for use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and one for shooting in an occupied building. He was then held without bond.

Herndon Parkway between Van Buren and Maple was closed for most of the evening and into the morning, but reopened to traffic shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Fairfax County Police Department's SWAT unit and Virginia State Police assisted HPD in its response to the barricade situation.
