Town Council Passes $49.9 Million Budget

At its public hearing on April 28, the Herndon Town Council adopted a Fiscal Year 2016 Budget of $49,887,900, a 2.2 percent increase over the fiscal 2015 budget. The town’s fiscal year begins on July 1 and runs to June 30.

“The adopted budget maintains the town’s current tax rate, allows for capital improvement planning and projects and – importantly – maintains the services and programs our residents expect and enjoy,” said Mayor Lisa Merkel. “It is not insignificant that the tax rate has not moved upward in the past five years, and that speaks to the professionalism and care of our staff and councils alike.”

Additionally, Merkel noted that the Town Council approved full grant funding for the town’s arts organizations – “A tangible demonstration of our commitment to the arts in Herndon, in accordance with the council’s vision,” she said.

Highlights of the adopted Fiscal Year 2016 Budget include:

  • Maintenance of the town real estate tax, meals tax and all other taxes and levies at their current levels;
  • Implementation of automated systems in trash collection and water meter reading; and
  • Longer-term planning for projects such as bus, auto, pedestrian and cyclist access to the future Silver Line Metrorail station; improvements to the intersection at Elden and Center streets; park improvements to include synthetic turf at Bready Park; and phase V expansion of the Herndon Community Center.
