Here are some local events and activities around Herndon to help you get into the holiday spirit.

HERNDON, VA — Even though many early birds were putting up their Christmas lights the day after Halloween — if they waited that long — Thanksgiving is generally considered the unofficial start of the holiday season.
As the weather gets colder and the shoppings malls become more crowded, many Herndon residents look forward to taking some time to enjoy their favorite holiday activities.

LuminoCity Festival Holiday Lights: Ongoing through Jan. 2, 4:30-9 p.m., at Roer's Zoofari, 1228 Hunter Mill Road in Vienna. Enjoy a unique outdoor holiday light display experience, which includes African, Asian, Arid, and Ancient-themed exhibits. Tickets start at $5 and can be purchased online.
Holiday Craft Pop-In: Thursdays (except Nov. 25 and Dec. 23), 10-11:30 a.m., at Arts Herndon, 750 Center St. Themed crafts for children and parents. Recommended donation $5. 703-956-6590.

Artists Holiday Market: Saturday, Nov. 27, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at Arts Herndon, 750 Center St. Support local artisans and purchase unique Christmas presents. Free. 703-956-6590.
Open Mic Holiday Style: Saturday, Nov. 27, 7 p.m., at Arts Herndon, 750 Center St. Share your favorite holiday poetry or music. Recommended donation $5. 703-956-6590.
Holiday Lights On the Farm: Saturday, Nov. 27, 5-8:30 p.m., at Frying Pan Farm Park, 2709 West Ox Road, Herndon. Tour light displays in the park from the safety of your car. Admission is $20 per vehicle for preregistered visitors and $25 the day of the event. Visitor limit is 15 passengers per vehicle. 703-437-9101.
Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!): Friday, Dec. 30-Sunday, Dec. 19, at NextStop Theatre, 269 Sunset Park Drive. An irreverent look at holiday classics and traditions. General admission is $25, some fees my apply. 703-481-5930 x1.

Holiday Tree Lighting & Sing-Along: Saturday, Dec. 4, 4-6 p.m., at Town Hall Square, 730 Elden St. Enjoy carols, watch the town's tree lighting ceremony and greet Santa. Free. 571-323-5300.
Herndon Holiday Arts & Craft Show: Sunday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave. More than 70 arts and crafts vendors will be selling their wares. Free admission and parking. 703-956-6590.
Home For The Holidays: Sunday, Dec. 5, 5-7 p.m., at Arts Herndon, 750 Center St. Treble Clefs and Friends present a holiday performance. Recommended donation $10. 703-956-6590.

New Year's Eve Golf Tournament: Friday, Dec. 31, 10 a.m., at Herndon Centennial Golf Course, 909 Ferndale Ave. Annual four-person scramble. Enter fee of $75 per player includes green fee, cart fee, range balls and prizes. Entry deadline is Dec. 26. 703-471-5769.
