HERNDON, VA — On Monday, residents and businesses in Herndon will take a moment to honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.
As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Herndon.
Before you head out, here’s a roundup of what’s open and what’s closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in our town:

Town of Herndon government offices: Herndon government offices are closed on Jan. 17.
Town of Herndon Police Department: Business offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 17, but dispatchers and officers will remain on duty 24/7. For all non-emergency matters, call 703-435-6846; use 911 for emergencies.

Fairfax County government offices: County government offices are closed on Jan. 17.
Courts: The Fairfax County General District Court, Circuit Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on Jan. 17.
Herndon Community Center will be closed on Jan. 17.
Community centers: Fairfax County community centers will be closed Jan. 15-17. Fastran will not operate on Jan. 17.
Beady Park Tennis Center will be open for random court time reservations on Monday. Call 703-787-7300 for details.
Herndon Centennial Golf Course will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Fairfax Connector: On Jan. 17, Fairfax Connector will run holiday weekday service. For more information, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector.
Libraries: Library locations are now closed on Sundays and Mondays. See hours for other days at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/branches.
Metro: Metrorail and Metrobus typically run on a Saturday schedule on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Due to the continued impacts of the derailment and 7000-series investigation, Metrorail service continues to be reduced. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables for more information.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 17.

Trash and recycling: Recycling normally collected on Monday in the Town of Herndon will be collected on Tuesday.
Trash and recycling centers: The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) are open regular hours on Jan. 17.
Virginia DMV: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Jan. 17.
