What's Open, Closed On MLK Jr. Day 2024 In Reston

See how the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will affect public parking, garbage pickup and more in Reston and Fairfax County.

RESTON, VA — Residents and businesses in Swill honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 15.

As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation and other services in Reston and across Fairfax County.

Reston will be hosting a number of events this weekend as part of its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration.

On Saturday, at 9 a.m., join other volunteers ages 6 and older at the Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate, for a morning of community service projects. To volunteer, contact Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager, at 703-435-7986 or ha@reston.org.

Reston Community Orchestra will present its Annual Musical Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 4 p.m., at RCC Hunters Woods Community Room. The program feature Sopranos Alia Waheed, Beverly Cosham and Dr. Gilbert Pryor, as well as students from Al Fatih Academy. Mark Irchai, the orchestra's new director, will be conducting his first concert with the orchestra. Tickets are $18 for seniors and $25 for adults. Youth and military are free. Grammy Award-winner Dan Zanes and Haitian American jazz vocalist Claudia Zanes will perform Sunday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m., at the CenterStage RCC Hunter Woods' CenterStage. Purchase tickets: $15 Reston/$20 Non-Reston.

Rev. William J. Barber will deliver a keynote address followed by a community lunch on Monday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m. This all-ages event is sold out, but patrons wishing to obtain tickets can visit the Centerstage Box Office window at RCC Hunter Woods to be placed on the awaiting list. Tikets will be released starting at 10 a.m. on Monday.

RCC Hunter Woods will be hosting activities for children 6-12 at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Athough this event is free, registration in required.

Below are the openings and closures to know for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday around Reston:

Reston Association Offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.

Fairfax County government offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.

Courts: Fairfax County Circuit Court and General District Court will be closed Monday, Jan. 15.

Post offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 15.

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Monday, Jan. 15;

Bready Park Tennis Center: Closed on Monday, Jan. 15.

Libraries: All Fairfax County Public Library branches will be closed Monday, Jan. 15.

Animal Shelter: The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will be closed Monday, Jan. 15.

Metrorail: Over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Metro will close a portion of the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines on Friday, Jan. 12 through Monday, Jan. 15. During the four-day closure, buses will replace trains with no rail service between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Arlington Cemetery on the Blue Line; and between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Clarendon on the Orange and Silver lines. The Rosslyn and Court House stations will be closed. Customers traveling through the work zone should expect significant delays and allow at least 30 minutes of additional travel time to account for shuttle buses.

Other Metro lines, including the Red Line, will operate on a Saturday holiday schedule from 5 a.m. to midnight on Monday, Jan. 15. View Metro timetables here.

Fairfax Connector: Fairfax Connector announces Holiday Weekday Service on Monday, Jan. 15 due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Recreation centers: Fairfax County recreation centers are open regular hours on Monday, Jan. 15.

Parks: Most Fairfax County parks will be open Monday, Jan. 15.

Trash and recycling: There will be no change in the trash and recycling collection schedules on Monday, Jan. 15 for county trash customers. Residents with private collection should contact their haulers.

Trash and recycling centers: The Recycling and Disposal Centers at the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex will both be open on Monday, Jan. 15.
