The firefighters also handed out pamphlets full of activities including a crossword puzzle, a connect the dots exercise, and a maze to complete, all with tips to remind children of ways to stay safe. The tips included information on properly wearing bicycle helmets, implementing a home escape plan, and practicing school bus and car safety. The firefighters hope that visiting schools helped reinforce safety concepts for the children and their families.
“It’s good to create a safe environment for the kids to be able to walk to school and see us in an environment where it’s fun,” said Prince William County Fire and Rescue Lt. Ross Shannon. “It was great to be out with the kids, helping to start their day off with a smile. It was a bit of a rainy morning, but the kids had a great attitude. They were happy to be there.”

“It just allows us to meet with the kids and provide them support and education. It’s just another way of promoting safety,” said Department of Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Matt Smolsky.
