The Town Council will hold a public hearing with respect to a proposed Town Charter update on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 314 Mill Street, Occoquan, VA 22125. This is an opportunity for the citizens of Occoquan to be heard to determine if they desire that the Town Council request the General Assembly to amend the Town’s existing charter. The current charter was adopted in 1930 and includes revisions through 1993.

The proposed amendments to the Town’s charter include: (1) updating the description of the Town’s boundary by referencing prior acts of the General Assembly and court orders; (2) changing the election dates for Council members and the Mayor from May to November; (3) changing the Mayor’s and Council members’ term of office from two years to four years; (4) eliminating provisions that duplicate provisions in the Code of Virginia; and (5) deleting provisions that are unconstitutional.
