Driver Critically Injured From Crash Into Utility Pole: Police

An SUV driver passed a Loudoun sheriff's deputy at a high rate of speed before he crashed into a utility pole, the sheriff's office said.

LEESBURG, VA — A driver crashed his SUV into a utility pole on Route 15 north of Leesburg early Friday morning, sending the man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. The driver was the vehicle's only occupant.

The crash occurred shortly after 1 a.m. near the intersection with Montressor Road. A sheriff's deputy was checking vehicle speeds with radar on Route 15 (James Monroe Highway) when he clocked the SUV traveling northbound well above the speed limit. The SUV passed the deputy's vehicle and continued traveling well in excess of the posted speed limit, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy turned his vehicle to attempt a stop but quickly lost sight of the vehicle. The deputy continued driving on Route 15 and discovered the driver had crashed into a utility pole near Montresor Road, causing the vehicle to catch fire. The deputy used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

Route 15 remained closed in both directions at Montressor Road for several hours after the crash. Utility crews were called to the scene to repair the utility pole damaged in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. Anyone who witnessed the crash and who has not already spoken to law enforcement is asked to contact Investigator S. Allen at 703-777-1021.
