Holiday Shopping Spotlight: Caulkin's Jewelers

Caulkin's Jewelers is more than just jewelry. You can find everything from $4 stocking stuffers to pottery, to a $25,000 diamond ring.

You won't find bigger proponents of the "shop local" movement than the folks who work at Caulkins Jewelers, located at 11 S. King St.

In business since 1956, owners Stanley and Roger Caulkins have seen a lot of changes come to Leesburg, many of which have hurt their business. "Those big box stores are cutting our legs off," Stanley Caulkins said.

Locally owned jewelry shops have become a thing of the past in many ways, and Caulkins Jewelers finds itself constantly trying to find what will appeal to Leesburg residents both old and new.

As a result, they're much more than jewelry. Caulkins says that some of their most popular items this holiday season have been scarves, umbrellas and pottery. In fact, Caulkins is the largest supplier in the area of Ceramika Artystyczna, a popular type of Polish pottery.

Caulkins employee Eileen Mosholder said that the pottery has become a big seller of theirs, even among their younger customers, "because it's pretty and it's functional."

"Our customers are catching on that this is better than the other pottery you can find," employee Elisabeth Sayer said.

In addition to their extensive pottery collection, Caulkins provides other home decor items, including crystal, linens and even holiday-themed decorations including nutcrackers.

They key at Caulkins is a diversity of items offered at a wide range of prices. You can get a hand-painted wooden egg from Poland that would make a great stocking stuffer for only $4, or you could pop the question with a $25,000 diamond and sapphire ring.

While the diamond ring is impressive, Caulkins says that it's the more affordable jewelry, such as the sterling silver, that's selling well for them right now. Caulkins has a wide array of necklaces, earrings and bracelets at many different price points.

Caulkins is also catering to the last-minute Christmas shoppers by offering 20 percent off many items in the store and staying open up until Christmas Eve.

Caulkins Jewelers is open, on Christmas Eve from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
