Leesburg Health Inspections: 1836 Kitchen, Magnolias At The Mill

The Loudoun County Health Department recorded several violations at facilities in the Leesburg area during recent inspections.

LEESBURG, VA — Several restaurants around Leesburg and western Loudoun County recorded violations during recent inspections from the health department. Inspectors conducted the most recent restaurant visits between Dec. 7 and Dec. 13.

Most COVID-19 restrictions around the state have relaxed, so health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

    • Date inspected: Dec. 9
    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed several gnats around the prep sink and near boxes containing potatoes.
      • Observed the following areas of the physical facilities in need of detail cleaning: Floors beneath all fixed equipment in main kitchen and the interior and exterior of cabinets and drawers in the Cottage kitchen.

    • Date inspected: Dec. 9
    • Total violations: 8
      • This facility could not provide documentation that the facility has a Certified Food Protection Manager.
      • Person in charge could not provide a verifiable manner that all employees are trained to report to the person in charge information about their health and activities as it relates to diseases that are transmissible through food.
      • Observed 2 employee drink containers without a lid on prep unit cutting board. Also observed one employee drink container covered with a lid on refrigeration unit.
      • Observed employee preparing a hamburger and touching the ready-to-eat hamburger bun with their bare hands.
      • Observed no hand drying provision at bar hand washing sink.
      • Observed no soap at bar hand washing sink.
      • Observed potato cutter in need of cleaning. Potato cutter was observed with heavy accumulation of residue. Per Person in Charge (PIC), cutter was last used yesterday.
      • Observed chemical dish machine at bar not sanitizing wares. Bar dish machine was observed at 0 PPM Chlorine. Bar dish machine was not connected to the sanitizer. Sanitizer observed unopened on the ground near the dish machine.

      • Observed food employee pick up cut onions for guacamole with bare hands.
      • Observed butane torch stored near micro greens.

      • Observed food stored on the ground in the in walk freezer and walk in refrigeration unit. Food shall be stored at least 6 inches off the ground.

      • Soap was not available at service window hand sink.
      • No paper towels available at bar hand sink for drying washed hands.
      • Observed tray of raw shell eggs stored directly on top of ready to eat (RTE) croissants in walk in cooler.
      • Observed dish machine sanitizer dispensing insufficiently. Chlorine sanitizer tested at 0ppm. Wash cycle reaches 92F maximum, while minimum requirement is 120F.
      • Observed the following food items, stored in refrigeration, have exceeded their 7-day use by date: Sliced turkey with preparation date of 12/4 stored in walk in cooler and spinach dip with preparation date of 12/1 stored in reach in cooler.

    • Total violations: 2
      • Ground beef mixture in walk-in is 51F.
      • Observed: Several bulk items in walk in were not covered t prevent contamination.
  • Hardware Cafe, 131 N 21st St Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: Dec. 13
    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed: There is no employee health policy (1B form) available for food handling employees that signifies training for food borne illnesses (signs and symptoms). Follow-up required.
      • Observed: There are no test strips to test quaternary amonia sanitizer in 3 compartment sink.
  • Finn Thai Restaurant, 126 N Maple Ave Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: Dec. 7
    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed: Women's restroom is missing signage instructing employees to wash hands before returning to work.
      • In walk in: Raw shell eggs in cases stored above ready to eat food (sprouts, onions). In prep table (underneath): raw shell eggs stored above ready to eat foods (tomatoes)
  • Magnolias At The Mill, 198 North 21st Street Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: Dec. 7
    • Total violations: 5
      • Observed employee utilizing disposable gloves and loading the dish machine with unclean dishes and then using the same soiled disposable gloves to remove clean dishes from the dish machine. Employee failed to remove the soiled gloves and wash their hands after handling soiled equipment or utensils prior to touching clean equipment or utensils.
      • Observed chemical dish machine in dish washer area used to sanitize glasses not properly sanitizing. Dish machine was observed at 0 PPM after being run 4 times.
      • Observed homemade cheese sauce hot holding at improper temperature. Cheese sauce was observed at 100F.
      • Observed cut tomato (45F), sliced cheese (49F), and succotash (44F) cold holding at improper temperatures in cold holding units above the prep tables.
      • Observed several cutting boards throughout the facility heavily scratched and scored. Cutting boards are no longer able to be effectively cleaned and sanitized.

    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed: Employee restrooms, since having been remodeled, do not have signage informing employees to wash hands before returning to work. Corrected.
      • Observed: cutting board at prep table in kitchen scarred with nicks and cuts.

    • Total violations: 2
      • A container of raw marinating chicken breast was found stored on top of a container of ready to eat (RTE) food (Ketchup). Raw proteins must be separated from RTE foods and arranged in a way that cross contamination may not occur. Person in charge (PIC) removed the chicken and placed on the bottom shelf, below the RTE foods.
      • Floors and surfaces of equipment in the kitchen have moderate-severe buildup of debris (food/grease/soil). Non food contact surfaces shall be cleaned at a frequency that precludes the accumulation of soil debris. Clean floors, faces of equipment on the line (coolers, fryer, ovens, walls & behind equipment - clean inside and outside of microwave. Clean surfaces of appliances at cardinal and dogwood servicing areas. Keep these clean to sight and touch.

      • Observed gaskets of 2 door refrigeration unit torn.
