Leesburg Health Inspections: Best Western, Lansdowne Kitchen

The Loudoun County Health Department recorded violations at several facilities around the Leesburg area during recent health inspections.

LEESBURG, VA — The Loudoun County Health Department recorded violations at several facilities in the Leesburg area during inspections between Aug. 3 and Aug. 9.

Most COVID-19 restrictions around the state have relaxed, so health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

  • Thaiverse, 101 S. Madison St Middleburg, VA 20117
    • Date inspected: Aug. 3
    • Total violations: 4
      • Observed: Employee restroom is missing signage informing employees to wash hands.
      • Noodles, cooked, packaged, observed stored in handwash sink.
      • Observed: TCS food Items in Prep table near cooking area are registering temperatures above acceptable level of 41F: chicken 61F; tofu 62.
      • Observed: Rice, cooked chicken in refrigeration do not have date marks indicating that they need to be consumed/used within 7 days. Corrected at inspection.
  • Red Bar Sushi, 16 E. Washington St Middleburg, VA 20117
    • Date inspected: Aug. 3
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed: Lemon slices in bar handsink.
      • Observed: Shell eggs stored over ready-to-eat food in the refrigeration unit.
      • Observed: Several menu (regular menu) items served undercooked (i.e. poke bowl, sashimi) do not have a reminder (asterisk) and disclosure informing patron that these menu items are undercooked.

    • Date inspected: Aug. 3
    • Total violations: 5
      • The person in charge (PIC) could not provide information in a verifiable means indicating the employees who work in the kitchen are properly trained to report signs and symptoms of illness and the reporting of the big six foodborne illnesses.
      • Paper towels were not available at hand sink for employees to dry hands after their hands are washed.
      • When the PIC was asked how food contact surfaces are cleaned, for example the milk pitcher, the item is washed, rinsed, and air dried. PIC was asked if any sanitizer is used for the milk pitcher, and the answer was no.
      • Consumer cold cereal self-dispensing bulk food is not prominently labeled in plain view of the consumer. This could lead to customers consuming food in which they could have an allergy too.
      • Bread and bagels are offered for consumer self service and there is no suitable dispensing methods other then the customers hands. This leads to contamination of bread products offered for the customers breakfast.

      • Observed box of bowls that was delivered the day before stored on the floor.
  • Lansdowne Main Kitchen, 44050 Woodridge Parkway Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 4
    • Total violations: 8
      • The person in charge (PIC) could not provide information in a verifiable means indicating that food staff are properly trained to report signs and symptoms of illness and the diagnoses of one of the big 6 foodborne illnesses.
      • Employee was observed handling and cutting peppers with their bare hands. The peppers were not intended to be cooked. Ready-to-eat foods can not be handled with bare hands.
      • Hot water at the hand sink by the dish machine was below 100 F.
      • The date when the last shellstock from the container was sold or served is not recorded on the tag or label. The date must be recorded on tag so the tag can be kept for 90 days from the date placed on the tag.
      • A pan with raw chicken was observed stored on top rack of cooler with ready to eat foods stored on lower shelves directly under the raw chicken.
      • Reduced oxygen packaged raw tuna was observed stored in cooler M that had been thawed on site without opening the package which can lead to illness.
      • Floor drains are very slow to drain. Waste water was observed in several drains. There is a concern that the waste water will back up into the restaurant kitchen creating a unsanitary conditions. The waste water could be kicked up / splashed onto food contact surfaces.
      • Ventilation by the high temperature dish machine is not sufficient to keep rooms free of excessive steam which can create condensation forming on the ceiling. The condensation can drip unsanitary water onto food and food contact surfaces. Mold was also observed on the ceiling grid and tiles. The mold spores will blow onto food and food utensils.

    • Date inspected: Aug. 4
    • Total violations: 4
      • The hand sink located at the entrance of the kitchen was obstructed with a pot at the time of the inspection.
      • Raw shell eggs (46 F) cold holding at improper temperatures.
      • Knife stored in between prep coolers.
      • Mop observed in the back of the restaurant drying improperly.
  • Velocity Wings, 20 Town Square #100 Lovettsville, VA 20180
    • Date inspected: Aug. 4
    • Total violations: 2
      • This violation has not been corrected at the follow-up inspection. Per manager, the facility is awaiting a part in order to repair the sink. The only hand washing sink in the kitchen had the water turned off. Handwashing sink was not supplied with hot running water.
      • This violation has not been corrected at the follow-up inspection. The food establishment serves or sells raw or undercooked food and the permit holder does not inform consumers of the significantly increased risk consuming such foods by way of an asterisk on each food item to reference the footnote that states the items are served raw or undercooked, or contain raw or undercooked ingredients.
  • Lansdowne Golf Clubhouse, 44050 Woodridge Parkway Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 4
    • Total violations: 6
      • Staff is not properly trained to monitor food holding temperatures. Staff is not monitoring reheating food temperatures.
      • Employee was observed rinsing off dirty dishes, loading dish machine, then proceeded to put clean dishes away without washing hands.
      • Cooked chicken breast were observed hot holding at 118 F so staff moved the chicken to the grill for reheating. Employee reheated the chicken and placed in pan. The internal temperature of the chicken was checked and was observed at 156 F. The chicken needs to be reheated to 165 F or greater.
      • The internal temperature of mashed potatoes and chicken on the hot holding line was observed below 120 F while the internal temperature needs to be 135 F or higher.
      • The following items were observed cold holding on the cook line House Pico, cut tomato, house slaw, and hot dog with internal food temperatures close to 50 F. TCS food need to be maintain at 41 F or less.
      • In use knife was observed stored with the blade down between two prep coolers with the handle stick out above the cooler. The sides of the cooler are not cleaned and sanitized regularly.
  • La Perla Restaurant, 119 Fort Evans Rd NE Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 4
    • Total violations: 4
      • During the inspection a spoon was observed in a hand sink in the kitchen.
      • Pico (51 F) was observed cold holding in prep cooler at temperatures above 41 F.
      • Date marking of time/temperature control for safety (TCS) food items in walk-in cooler were inconsistent during time of inspection.
      • During the inspection, an ice scoop was observed in the ice machine with the handle making contact with the ice. The ice scoop handle was used with bare hands.

    • Date inspected: Aug. 5
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed: Temperature of beef slices in warmer: 94F
      • Observed: 3 compartment sink that holds sanitizer solution does not hold water.
      • Observed: Hood blower fan that is directly above food prep area does not have housing around it.

      • Paper towels were not available at the hand sinks in employee restroom and hand sink in kitchen.
      • No hand soap observed at hand sinks in kitchen and in employee restroom hand sink.
      • Food utensils were observed being washed and rinsed but not sanitized prior to placing in drying area.
