Leesburg Health Inspections: Cockroach Crawled Across Cutting Board

The Loudoun County Health Department recorded violations at several facilities around Leesburg during recent restaurant inspections.

LEESBURG, VA — The Loudoun County Health Department recorded violations at several Leesburg area restaurants during inspections from Aug. 24 to Aug. 30.

Most COVID-19 restrictions around the state have relaxed, so health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

  • Lansdowne Main Kitchen, 44050 Woodridge Parkway Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 24
    • Total violations: 3
      • Hot water at hand sink by dish machine was observed with no flow.
      • Some floor drains are slow to drain as water was observed backing up in floor sink.
      • Steam was observed rolling out of high temp dish machine creating condensation.
  • Lansdowne Golf Clubhouse, 44050 Woodridge Parkway Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 24
    • Total violations: 3
      • Staff is not monitoring cold holding food temperatures.
      • The internal food temperatures were observed : wings 43 F; raw chicken 43 F; cooked short ribs 42 F while cold holding in walk-in cooler.
      • In use knife was observed with the blade of knife between two prep coolers on line.

    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed: Fly tape in kitchen hanging over food preparation area.
      • A review of the menu with the Person In Charge indicates that there is no consumer advisory for the following food item(s) that may be served raw and/or undercooked: burgers

    • Date inspected: Aug. 25
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed: Due to recent repainting handwash signs are missing from employee restroom and bar area. Corrected.
      • Observed: Quail eggs stored above ready to eat food (dairy). Corrected.
      • Observed: low temperature dish machine registering 0 parts per million chlorine. Temperature 139F
  • Loudoun Kitchen and Bar (The), 510 Market Street East Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 25
    • Total violations: 5
      • Employee at bar was observed handling raw fruit to place in drink with their bare hands.
      • Paper towels were not available at employee hand sink to dry hands.
      • Five unlabeled spray bottles with clear liquid in them was observed in the kitchen.
      • Several packages or reduced oxygen packaged salmon was observed sealed and thawed in the prep cooler.
      • Bin of ice for mixed drinks were observed with bottles of liquor stored in direct contact with the mix drink ice at bar. The bottles were not cleaned and sanitized prior to placing in the drink ice which now has been contaminated.

      • The low temperature dish machine is not dispensing sanitizer.

      • The Certified Food Protection Manager certificate expired on 4/4/2022.
      • Observed a food employee bare hand touch pickled green peppers that is used for garnish on food dishes.
      • Kitchen hand sink needs signage to remind food employees to wash their hands.
      • Observed no paper towels at hand sink.
      • Observed a variety of foods in prep cooler uncovered.
      • Observed can open with a build up of dirt and debris.
      • Observed cut tomatoes 61F, cut leaf lettuce 70F, thin 46F and wide 50F noodles at an improper cold holding temperature all items were on the counter out of temperature control. Person in charge stated that food items had been on the counter no more then an hour.
      • Observed small live cockroach walking on cutting board that was on the floor under the dishwasher. There was a large dead cockroach on top of the dishwasher.
      • Observed cleaned cutting broads, pots and pans being stored on the floor under the dishwasher.
      • Observed a build up of dirt and debris on the top of the dishwasher as well as the plastic guard in the ice machine.
      • The hand sinks in the kitchen and the bars hot water was turned off because the hand sinks leak.
  • Manhattan Pizzeria & Luv'n Berry, 647 Potomac Station Dr #70 Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 26
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed cooked gyro meat, cooked chicken, lasagna, and cooked noodles not dated for disposition.
      • Observed time as a public health control being used for prepared pizza slices not marked with when the food was removed from temperature control.
      • Observed pre-portioned frozen mac & cheese thawing on prep unit at room temperature.
  • James Cafe, 671 Potomac Station Dr Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 26
    • Total violations: 7
      • Observed dishes in hand sink by 3 compartment sink.
      • There was no soap in the restroom.
      • In walk in cooler raw chicken and raw beef were uncovered.
      • Observed cooked broccoli 46F, bean sprouts 49F, and cut cabbage 46F at an improper cold holding temperature. Stated food items were in top half of prep cooler setting above the prep cooler capability of keeping food cold.
      • Observed fried chicken nuggets 84F and pot stickers 86F cooling on the counter. Person in charge stated the food items had been there for about a half an hour.
      • Observed the use of grocery bags to store a variety of food items
      • Person in charge could not provide chlorine test strips need to test the concentration for the 3-compartment sink.

      • Observed food containers in dry storage not air dried before stacking on top of one another.

      • Observed 2 cutting boards on prep units that are heavily scratched and scored. Cutting boards are no longer easily cleanable.
      • Observed kitchen floors in need of repair. Several tiles are cracked/ broken. Also observed back door with significant daylight coming from seams of door. Back door is no longer tight fitting.

      • Observed beans & cheese, pork & cheese, and Queso on the counter out of temperature control. Person in charge that Time as a Public Control (TPHC) is being use without written procedures in place.
      • Observed Reduced Oxygen Packaging (ROP) fish in packing in 1 door reach in cooler.
      • Facility did not have chlorine test strips to test 3-compartment sink.

      • Observed butane store on shelf with dry storage food items.
      • Observed Advil stored next to butane on shelf with dry storage food items.
      • Observed steak thawing in a metal pan on a shelf on the cook line.
      • Observed cutting boards at prep coolers 1 & 2 with heavy scratching and scoring.

    • Total violations: 5
      • Employees were observed handling ready to eat foods with their bare hands. Ready to eat foods were observed without any form of date marking to determine age of product.
      • Employee was observed handling bread with their bare hands after the bread was removed from the grill.
      • Numerous prepared food items were observed stored in cooler without date marking. Items include baba ghanouge, tzatziki, cooked spinach and falafel mix.
      • The ice deflector inside of ice machine was observed with a black residue on it.
      • Water was observed raining down from ceiling in front of the dirty dish side of the dish machine in the kitchen.

      • Observed: No hand towels available at hand sink near 3 compartment sink.
