Leesburg Health Inspections: Red Bar Sushi, Schmidt's Barbecue
The Loudoun County Health Department recorded violations at several facilities around Leesburg during recent restaurant inspections.
LEESBURG, VA — Several restaurants around Leesburg and western Loudoun County recorded violations during recent inspections from the health department. Inspectors conducted the most recent restaurant visits between Dec. 21 and Dec. 27.
Most COVID-19 restrictions around the state have relaxed, so health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.
Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

- Red Bar Sushi & Best Thai Kitchen, 4 East Federal St Middleburg, VA 20117
- Date inspected: Dec. 21
- Total violations: 7
- Observed: employee in kitchen washed hands in three compartment sink.
- Observed: Low temperature dish machines in kitchen and bar were not delivering chlorine. Chlorine reading: 0 parts per million in both. Person In Charge replaced empty chlorine containers, which then allowed delivery of chlorine at 100 ppm (kitchen) and 50 ppm (bar)
- Observed: sushi rice is being held under time as a public health control, but there is no documentation to verify.
- Observed: The regular lunch menu (not the sushi menu) does not have a consumer advisory (reminder or disclosure) for the undercooked items offered.
- Observed: toxic materials in basement are stored adjacent to dry store items, dry storage foods.
- Observed: There is no thermometer available in the kitchen for checking cold hold, hot hold or cooking temperatures.
- Observed: Dishwasher that is enclosed in wall at bar area is not sealed around the edges.

- Date inspected: Dec. 21
- Total violations: 2
- Observed hand washing sink in the kitchen turned off. Handwashing sink observed continuously running when the sink is turned on. This is the only hand washing sink in the cooking/kitchen area.
- Observed a large container of raw chicken sitting out at room temperature. Chicken was observed cold holding at improper temperature (57F).
- McDonald's, 121 Maple Avenue Purcellville, VA 20132
- Date inspected: Dec. 21
- Total violations: 1
- Observed hand washing sink by the 3 compartment sink turned off. Per PIC, the hand washing sink sensor is not working. If the facility turns the water on, the hand washing sink will continuously run.
- Schmidt's Barbecue, 14 Loudoun Street SE Leesburg, VA 20175
- Date inspected: Dec. 27
- Total violations: 6
- Observed pulled pork, that the facility cooks from raw and then cools, not reheated to 165F. When asked, the person in charge (PIC) could not answer how they rapidly reheat the food to 165F. The food was observed at 66F in a hot box that was set to 145F.
- Observed potato salad prepared on 12/18 in need of disposition. Potato salad exceeded 7-day shelf life.
- Observed daylight from front door seams. The door is no longer tight fitting, allowing the potential for pest entry.
- Observed plumbing under the 3 compartment sink in disrepair. Plumbing connection under a basin is missing, facility is using duct tape to direct water flow from the bottom of the basin into the floor sink.
- Physical facility is not observed maintained according to the food regulations. Outdoor bar observed with keg dispensers, mixing cocktail drink station, ice machine stocked with ice and an ice scoop. Per PIC, when they are busy, they use the outdoor bar.
- Observed pieces of unused equipment in the back storage area, creating a harborage condition. Equipment includes a table, an ice machine and a 3 compartment sink.
