Leesburg Restaurant Inspections: Violations At 13 Locations

The Loudoun County Health Department found violations at 13 restaurants in the Leesburg area during their recent routine inspections.

LEESBURG, VA — Officials from the Loudoun County Health Department inspected multiple restaurants across the Leesburg area from Sept. 15 to Sept. 21, including 13 different locations with violations.

As coronavirus restrictions continue to fluctuate around the state, health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

  • El Rancho Plus, 101-C Maple Ave Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: Sept. 15
    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed no Certified Food Protection Manager.
      • Observed door sweep to back door in need of repair. Daylight observed. Door is not tight fitting.
  • Patama Thai Kitchen, 101 S. Maple Ave, Ste E Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: Sept. 15
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed hand washing sink blocked by a large bowl.
      • Observed mop sink supplied with hand washing soap. Per discussion with PIC, employees may wash their hands in the sink.
      • Observed red tofu in prep unit 2 cold holding at improper temperatures. Red tofu was observed above the fill line. Also observed foods in beef, chicken, and sauce containing garlic and oil cold holding at improper temperatures in 2 door refrigeration unit.
  • 5 Tara Authentic Indian Cuisine, 1600 Village Market Blvd SE #132 Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Sept. 16
    • Total violations: 9
      • The establishment could not demonstrate the ability to provide written procedures for employees to follow when responding to vomiting or diarrheal events that involve the discharge of vomitus or fecal matter onto surfaces in the food establishment.
      • A sign or poster that notifies food employees to wash their hands is not provided and/or is not clearly visible at all handwashing sinks used by food employees.
      • Raw lamb stored over uncovered cooked chicken.
      • Cutting boards at prep cooler 1 and 2 are scored from knives cutting.
      • Prep cooked chicken was made on 9/15 had no dating.
      • Bleach being stored next to food contact surfaces (bowls).
      • Observed basil chicken thawing in the 3 compartment sink.
      • Observed food items being stored on the floor of the freezer.
      • Observed ice scoops improperly stored on boxes above and around the ice machine.

    • Total violations: 3
      • The facility is cooking raw animal foods using a non-continuous process that is not compliant for the following reasons: written procedures not maintained in the facility, salmon is cooked to temperature specified by guest including undercooked temperatures.
      • Observed raw chicken stored above ribs in fry cooler.
      • Observed hand washing sink in kitchen without working soap for employees.

    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed no Certified Food Protection Manager.
      • Observed raw bacon stored over bread in 3 door refrigeration unit.
      • Observed cooked potatoes hot holding at improper temperatures.
  • Leesburg Public House, 962 Edwards Ferry Rd NE Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Sept. 16
    • Total violations: 6
      • Observed employee belongings stored above clean plate ware.
      • Observed fly trap being stored at bar counter under the beer taps.
      • Facility is holding TCS foods (par cooked french fries, onion rings, and chicken and beef broth out of temperature control without having written procedures maintained.
      • Observed cut tomatoes, sliced portioned beef, mozzarella cheese, green tomatoes cold holding at improper temperatures at prep cooler on the line most likely due to double panning. All TCS foods in protein walk-in cooler were observed at improper cold holding temperatures.
      • Observed smoked bone-in chicken breast and smoked racks of ribs improperly cooled to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Said time and temperature control for safety (TCS) foods were prepared previous day and stored to cool overnight.
      • Observed raw chicken in low boy cooler stored above ready-to-eat food items.

    • Date inspected: Sept. 17
    • Total violations: 1
      • Live small flies were observed in the kitchen area.
  • T’Kila Mexican Kitchen & Bar, 19345 Promenade Dr Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Sept. 17
    • Total violations: 5
      • An accumulation of grease was observed on floor under and behind cook line.
      • Many live flies were observed in the kitchen. Live roaches were observed in the kitchen area.
      • Many cooked food items were observed without any date marking.
      • The internal temperature of rice 44°, cut tomato 43°, cooked chicken 43°, and cooked beef at 43°F while cold holding in walk-in cooler.
      • Chicken meat was observed hot holding at 93°F in small warmer.

    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed 2 1 gallons jugs of milk with an expiration date of 9/10/2021.

    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed no verifiable manner that a kitchen staff member was aware to report to the person in charge information about their health and activities as they relate to diseases transmissible through food.
  • Loudoun County High School, 415 Dry Mill Road Sw Leesburg, VA 20175

    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed dish machine sanitizing with chlorine not meeting the required sanitizing levels. 0 PPM chlorine when tested with EHS and person in charge test strips.
      • Observed daylight through back door near the door sweep. Door sweep is in need of repair.

    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed 1 handwashing aid at each double basin sinks. Handwashing aids are paper towels in paper towel dispenser.
      • Observed ice machine guard inside unit is not clean with red film layer on ice machine guard, inside unit.

    • Date inspected: Sept. 21
    • Total violations: 7
      • One set of overhead lights in the kitchen was missing the light cover.
      • Hand sink at dish machine was slow to drain.
      • Manager could not find the food thermometer to measure internal food temps.
      • A spray bottle of Clorox cleaner was observed stored on top of ice machine.
      • Several containers of food were observed cold holding at 43°F in walk-in cooler.
      • Container of yogurt was observed stored directly on top of cooked chicken on prep line. A number of food items were observed stored in walk-in cooler with no cover / lids.
      • Employee was observed rinsing dirty dishes at dish machine, loading dish machine the putting clean dishes away without washing hands.
