Loudoun County Boys Lacrosse Victors in Rivalry Match Up

Raiders Edge out Heritage, 13-9

The Heritage and Loudoun County boy’s lacrosse teams took the field Saturday morning in a highly anticipated rivalry match up. While both teams battled, it was the home team, Loudoun County, who came up with the big win.

The Pride scored first in the game, but then were shutdown throughout the rest of the first quarter.  Loudoun County’s defense stepped up after allowing the first goal.  Their defense stopped several shots on goal and prevented the opportunity for the Pride to add to their early lead.  The Raiders’ offense also stepped up as senior Jack Reimers picked up two goals giving County the 2-1 lead heading into the second quarter.

Unlike the first quarter where defense was the story, both team’s offenses came alive in the second.  It was a back and forth scoring fest as neither defense could stop their opponent.  Heritage’s midfielders, Chuck Carlin and Drew Burkhard, together contributed five of the Pride’s seven goals in the second quarter.  The Raider’s picked up five goals in the quarter, one of which again came from Reimers.

Heritage took the 8-7 lead into halftime.

After regrouping at the half, Loudoun County quickly came out and tied the game.  Heritage’s Burkhard then raced down the field and scored the Pride’s first goal of the second half giving his team back the lead.  The Raider’s responded with five more goals in the final two quarters.  Peyton Stone shot two of those goals, while once again Reimers was responsible for one.

Their offensive surge provided a sturdy lead as the Raider’s defense dominated the remainder of the game.  Loudoun County did not allow a single goal in the remaining nineteen minutes left in the match, as they won by a final score of 13-9.

Loudoun County’s top scorer on the day, Jack Reimers, said it was a “very good win against cross town rivals.”  Reimers has high hopes for the rest of the season.  “The goal is to finish where we want, which is top of the division.”

Head coach of Heritage, Jason Burke, thought his team played “erratic…good in spots and frustrating in others.  His team came up short in the big rivalry, but Burke commented that “effort by no means is an issue.”

Winning coach on the day, Loudoun’s Pat Jewell, said “We were a little sloppy early.  In the second half, we really cleaned up.” Jewell and his team were proud to have come out on top in this heated rivalry.  “It’s a big game for the kids.  They circle it every year on the schedule,” Jewell commented, “…a much higher level of excitement.”

Heritage drops to 4-7 on the season and will travel to play Stonewall Jackson on Thursday, May 5th.

The Raiders are now 8-3 and will take on Dominion at home on Monday.
