Worker With Loudoun County Department of Family Services Charged With Embezzlement
A worker with the Loudoun County Department of Family Services has been charged with stealing about $29K from a child subsidy fund.

LEESBURG, VA — Theresa A. Smith of Haymarket has been charged with two criminal counts after authorities said she stole nearly $30,000 from a child subsidy program.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office arrested Smith Wednesday on two embezzlement counts after an investigation into her work with the Loudoun County Department of Family Services.
Smith is accused of embezzling about $29,000 from the Child Subsidy Program when she worked for DFS as a child care specialist, the sheriff's department said in a news release.

The agency alerted the sheriff's office after an internal review discovered possible fraud, a news release said. The investigation covered the period November 2021 through October 2022, and more than 550 hours were found to have been fraudulently billed to the county.
Smith surrendered at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center Wednesday after being told that warrants had been obtained for her arrest.

She was released on $5,000 bond.
