Nuzzaco Seeks Return to School Board from Leesburg District

After serving one term as the Catoctin District representative, Nuzzaco lost his re-election bid to incumbent Jennifer Bergel. Redistricting moved him to Leesburg District, where he hopes to unseat incumbent Tom Marshall.

Mark Nuzzaco served one term on the Loudoun County School Board, representing Catoctin District from 2004-07. After he was defeated by Catoctin incument Jennifer Bergel, he was redistricted into the Leesburg District, now represented by incumbent Tom Marshall. Nuzzaco is in a three-way race with Marshall, endorsed by the Loudoun County Democrats, and Bill Fox who is also seeking the Leesburg seat.

This is Nuzzaco’s campaign statement from his Facebook Page:

Loudoun County has great public schools that we need to maintain and further improve. But post-2008 economic realities demand changes that will reduce costs while still meeting the needs of one of the fastest growing school systems in the country.

If elected I will:

• Work to involve the School Board directly in seeking greater economic development in Loudoun County, with the goal of seeking new sources of revenue that will lessen taxes on households;

• Work to implement a new zero-based LCPS budget process that includes more community input by creating a Citizens Budget Advisory Committee;

• Work to establish a new reality-based LCPS Pay Scale that -

1. Is the cornerstone of every year’s operating budget and recognizes that highly qualified teachers are the most important factor in educating our children, after nurturing homes that prepare students to learn when they come to school

2. Raises starting teacher pay to be competitive in the Northern Virginia market once again, in order to attract the best teachers

3. Has a more gradual rate of increase that is economically realistic and sustainable; I see no virtue in a pay scale that has become meaningless numbers that are disregarded year after year.

• Work to move toward a merit-based pay system appropriate to educating students in the classroom, not manufacturing widgets in a factory

• Work to re-evaluate LCPS building platforms and standards

• Work toward a means-tested student-based technology program that reduces the expense of school-provided technology

• Work to evaluate alternatives to the traditional school calendar

• Work to creatively offer Monroe Advanced Technology Academy programs to more students

• Work to improve Special Education and Pupil Services

• Work to maintain discipline and safety in Loudoun County Public Schools

• Work to improve character development and increased civility and modesty in Loudoun County Public Schools
