Poolesville Celebrates First "Poolesville in History Day"

Festivities Include Launch of Hot Air Balloon, Civil War Reenactments, Live Exhibits.

The Town of Poolesville will host “Poolesville in History Day” on Saturday, May 7 in the town’s central gathering place, Whalen Commons, at Fisher Avenue and Beall Street in Poolesville. From 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., visitors will be transported back through time and will embark on a journey through Poolesville’s historic timeline, complete with war reenactments and era attire.

“Poolesville in History Day’s” main feature presentation will be the launch of Professor Thaddeus Lowe’s Civil War observation hot air balloon at 9:00 a.m. Lowe was the father of the American Aeronautical Corporation and said to have been the inspiration for the character Oz, from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

· Historical Entertainment from Jubilee Voices of the Washington Revel singing the story of a Poolesville slave

· Historical lunch featuring Civil War Menu and attire at Bassett’s Restaurant

· Special guests also include Poolesville founder John Poole, Jr. and the USS Constellation Ship’s Company

“Poolesville played an important part in American history and we’re excited to commemorate our heritage with this very special event,” said Rande Davis, a longtime member of the Historic Medley District in Poolesville and co-publisher and editor of the Monocacy Monocle newspaper. “There are historic reminders immersed through our town, but this special Poolesville in History Day will help to bring to life the events and people who have shaped our history.”

Poolesville in History Day is being coordinated through Historic Medley District, Inc., with support from the Town of Poolesville and local business sponsors.
