Rose McGowan Asks Not To Appear At Cocaine Hearing

Actress Rose McGowan wants to avoid further Loudon County court appearances on a drug charge, citing unfairness under heavy media scrutiny.

LEESBURG, VA — Actress and activist Rose McGowan's lawyer will request on Monday that his client not be made to appear in court on June 12 in an upcoming hearing amid the immense media attention on her case. McGowan faces drug charges stemming from a January incident in which she allegedly had cocaine in her wallet.

McGowan's attorney, James Hundley, said in a letter "This case has garnered a great deal of media attention. Waiving Ms. McGowan’s appearance at term day could help avoid disruptions that the media’s presence might cause to the court’s calling of its term day docket," WTOP reported.

McGowan landed at Dulles International Airport in January on a United flight from Los Angeles. When the post-flight cleaning crew found her wallet, it had two small bags filled with what allegedly tested positive as cocaine.

Jessica Carmichael, another of McGowan's attorneys, said there is "no evidence" that McGowan was aware of the cocaine. They suggest that the cocaine may have been planted by an agent of Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie producer McGowan accuses of sexually assaulting her.

While he is the main target of the #MeToo activist movement, Weinstein claims all sexual encounters between him and McGowan were consensual.

Paul Ebert, the special prosecutor on McGowan's case, didn't oppose Hundley's request to waive his client's appearance. That will be discussed on Monday, WTOP reports.
