Can a used bike seat be art?
A new exhibition at the Workhouse called Standing Room Only proves this to be true.

Repurposing a functional object as a basis for art can be considered a staple in modern art. Bicycles, once seen as merely a mode of transportation, have come to represent a more environmentally friendly lifestyle of reducing, reusing and recycling. Standing Room Only plays on these concepts by asking artists to create art with used bike seats.
The show presented the artists with the challenge of adapting their style to the shape and material of the bike seat. The finished pieces demonstrate the individuality and diversity of each artist. Each seat is displayed on custom built stands in a direction that best fits its aesthetic. As Gregg Deal put it when he agreed to be part of the show, “I have a significant love for bikes and think this would be fantastic.”
We hope you think it’s fantastic, too.
