Lorton Precipitation Amounts April 22 - 28, 2013

Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.

I feel confident at this point saying we’ve seen the last of the snow from winter 2012-2013.  Time to focus on growing - we need warmth and water.  Though this week didn’t have too much rain, for the water year (since October first) we’ve had 1.02” of precipitation more than we usually do.  The drought of last year, for us anyway, thankfully remains in last year.

How are we doing on reaching the ground temperature needed for Cicada emergence, or planting, depending on your focus?  It’s just below 60 degrees fahrenheit, good for planting but below the 64.5 degrees needed to awaken the Cicadas.  It looks like we’ve got a cool stretch coming for the next few weeks so I think I’m going to miss on my forecast from last week - I’m thinking mid-may now.
