Lorton precipitation amounts Mar 25 - 31, 2013; was it a snowy winter?
Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.
This is the last week I plan on reporting snowfall totals for the season. This winter I measured a total of 6” of snow. Last winter I measured only 1.2” of snow, so by comparison it was... nothing like the winter of 2009-2010. A professor at Penn State where I got my meteorology degree liked to describe snow as being either nuisance, plowable, or crippling... we had a winter that threatened to be between nuisance and plowable, certainly never was crippling.
So on to spring - when do we need to worry about watering our lawns? Clearly we don’t want to do it when it’s freezing, so I looked at the records for Ft Belvoir to see how often it freezes in April. Climatologically, about 35% of the nights in early April are below freezing and that lowers to below 10% after the 17th of the month. It does still happen in May but for planning purposes I’m going to consider myself safe from freezes in the middle of the month.
