Lorton rainfall Aug 20-26, 2012; Isaac's coming!

Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.

The big weather news this week is going to be the landfall of Hurricane Isaac.  Wherever it comes ashore (sometime on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning), it’ll bring a lot of rain to a part of the country that could use some, whether that area ultimately ends up being our area or the Midwest.  A map of expected rainfall accompanies this article - though it’s only general in terms of above average and below average precipitation.  Of course, there’ll probably be flooding and tornadoes as well.  The further west it comes ashore, the less likely we are to see any rain in Virginia.  It should be noted that there has been greater than usual uncertainty in the track forecast - the forecast models have not been performing consistently and there is considerable disagreement among them.

This was a good week for our area rain-wise.  Our year to date rainfall deficit this week improved to 11.72”  My rain gauge in Lorton recorded the following precipitation at 6am on the day indicated for the previous 24 hours:

Date Precip Mon 08/20/2012 0.25” Tue 08/21/2012 0.18” Wed 08/22/2012 0.01” Thu 08/23/2012 0.00” Fri 08/24/2012 0.00” Sat 08/25/2012 0.00” Sun 08/26/2012 0.37” Weekly Totals 0.81”
