Lorton Rainfall Sept. 17-23: Halfway Through Hurricane Season

Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 - November 30; here’s where we’ve been.  The latest storm (Hurricane Nadine) was the 14th storm to form this year in the Atlantic basin.  At this point, the season is the second most active season (tied with 1936) since records began in 1851, in terms of the number of named storms. Only 2005 and 2011 had more named storms as of September.  Eight tropical storms formed in August, making August 2012 the most active August in terms of Atlantic basin tropical storm activity, tied with the 2004 season.  So far, the activity is in line with the August update to the NOAA 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook Update, which raised the prediction for the number of named storms to between 12 and 17.
