Using Language to Help With Transitions
Milestone Speech Therapy, LLC is a pediatric speech therapy practice located in Lorton, VA that provides in-home speech, language and feeding services to children of all ages.

As the summer comes to a close, our kids are getting ready to head back to school. Many children have difficulty transitioning to a new schedule, but we as parents and caregivers can help them prepare to transition.
- Let your child know that his schedule is changing. Talk about his schedule now, give him a countdown until there is a new schedule. Use visual reinforcements such as a calendar. e.g. You have five more days at home, and then you will be starting your new school. Let’s count the days together.

- Before you start a new morning schedule, have “practice” morning routines the week prior to the start of school. Have your child wake up and get ready for the day as if he is going to school.
Talk through what the new routine will be e.g. First we will all wake up, then get dressed, go downstairs and eat breakfast, next we will brush our teeth, then pack our backpack, and finally put on our shoes before going to school. After you practice your new routine, encourage your child to tell you about the routine.

**If possible, lie out school clothes, and have backpack and shoes by the front door ready for the morning. You may encourage your child to help you with this before he goes to bed.
- Encourage your child to talk to you about their new schedule. Give them open-ended prompts e.g. What are you most looking forward to doing at your new school?
- If your child will be receiving homework, let him know that his afternoon schedule may be changing and including time set aside for school work. e.g. When you get home from school you can have a snack, then we will sit down at the table to start your homework. Sit down with your child during his snack time to talk about his day and review his homework assignment
