VolRUNteer 5K & Fun Run

Fairfax County, VA – Volunteer Fairfax to promote volunteerism and healthy living by launching its first-ever VolRUNteer 5K & Fun Run, November 14, 2010. Registered individuals will not only have an opportunity to walk or run a USATF Certified course, but will be supporting a community cause at the same time. More than 200 registered individuals and supporters will kick off the holiday season of giving by pledging one volunteer hour per kilometer totaling five pledged hours per registrant. This is the equivalent to over $20,000 donated to local area nonprofits.[1]

"Our goal with this event is promote volunteerism as an important aspect of healthy living," said Jeanne Sanders, executive director of Volunteer Fairfax. "Exercise and actively helping others are some of the keys to a well-balanced life. It is rewarding for community members to know that their efforts in volunteerism bring significant health benefits."

The race festivities commence at 8:00 a.m., at George Mason University with a special guest appearance by Britt McHenry, sports reporter for ABC7/WJLA-TV. The 5K course is USATF Certified and race supporters have the opportunity to observe runners at multiple points. All runners will receive a free t-shirt and 30 prizes will be offered across all age groups. The race is open to anyone and costs $35 per participant.

Event registration begins at 6:30 a.m., followed by the 8:00 a.m. opening ceremony. Admission to the event is free. There is no registration deadline but all are encouraged to register online prior to the event to secure a free t-shirt.
