Lorton precipitation amounts August 26 - September 1, 2013; Goodbye summer!

This summer has been pretty wet.  We got 19.54” of rain during this year’s meteorological summer, which ran between 6/1/2013 and 8/31/2013.  So what’s normal during this period?  10.3” in Lorton.  Last year was dry, this year’s been wet.  Last year during the same time we had only 6.89”.  Interestingly we had some longer periods of no rain this year (7 days with no rain in mid-July vs 4 days in a row last year both around Independence day and at the end of August) but what rain did fall last year was generally light.  This summer we had eleven events with more than ½” of rain falling, and six of those had more than an inch.  Those eleven days provided 15.02” of rain.  Last summer had only four days with more than ½” of rain, totalling 3.71”

Hurricane season has been pretty quiet so far, but the season’s peak is on September 10. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th, and by now we’ve usually seen a hurricane somewhere in the Atlantic.  None of the six named storms so far this year have reached that strength.

My rain gauge in Lorton recorded 0.17” of rain last week.
