Mason Neck State Park Getting Close to $50,000 Prize--Still Needs Votes!

With nine days to go, MNSP is far ahead of the 3rd and 4th place parks and would appear to have the $50,000 second place prize clinched--except for the peculiar voting process. Anyone can record 10 votes a day through the MapMyFitness site and do it retroactively to the start of the contest on June 6 by reporting 20 minutes of a "fitness activity" for each day. Plus, the last two days--July 14 & 15--are double vote days--so there are a lot of votes still to come.

Mason Neck could really use the prize--its 3-year old exhibit room is almost empty because there is no money in the state budget for getting display items. So if you haven't yet, please:

  • Go to coke.com/parks to sign up and vote.
  • While still logged in to the Coke site, click on the FourSquare icon and sign up there to link it to the Coke site. Then you can cast 5 votes a day by going to foursquare.com/mobile and "checking in" at Mason Neck State Park.)
  • While still logged in to the Coke site, click on the MapMyFitness icon and sign up there. As noted above, you can cast 10 votes retroactively back to June 6 for any day that you have 20 minutes of a "fitness activity", which could be yard work, walking, mopping, vacuuming, biking, workouts, weight training, or most anything that involves movement.
Or, to do it the easy way, email the dedicated MNSP supporters at voteforwildlife@gmail.com and they will do the sign-ups for you, or answer any questions

Remember to vote at all three sites every day, especially July 14 and 15. You can check if your votes have been recorded by clicking on "My Activity" on the Coke site. (There may be a lag before the FourSquare votes show up, and the mapMyFitness votes show up once a day at about 8 PM.) Every vote is appreciated!

First place is still held by Veterans Memorial Park in Moore, Oklahoma--we won't feel too bad about losing to them, because both the park and the town were devastated by a tornado in May. But we really would like to hold on to second place, and the 4th place park is mounting a big challenge--it was in 9th just a few days ago.

And there is a Friends of MNSP meeting--7pm, Tuesday, July 9, at the Visitor center--anyone is welcome to attend.
