Snow Threat: Prepare for Next Two Rush Hours, VDOT Says

A late winter storm could impact your commute Thursday night and Friday morning, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is getting the word out Thursday afternoon ahead of possible snow that could impact commutes for Northern Virginia residents Thursday night and Friday morning.

VDOT is asking drivers to start to plan for the late winter storm, expected to impact traffic Thursday night through Friday morning with up to several inches of snow.

If possible, Northern Virginia residents should try to delay any trips until after the morning rush hour Friday, VDOT advises, to avoid potential slushy road conditions.

Snow Latest: Winter Weather Advisory Begins Thursday Night

On Wednesday, crews started spreading anti-icing materials on interstates and major roads and are finishing preparations Thursday, the agency said in an an announcement.

Crews will also be staged along major roads to handle the afternoon rush hour Thursday, ramping up to about 1,400 trucks to treat roads overnight and through the morning rush hour, VDOT said. Some crews will also be on alert through the weekend for possible refreeze.

Drivers are asked to be alert to winter weather over the next two rush hours, and:

  • Delay trips until after the Friday morning rush hour if possible
  • Check www.511virginia.org or the mobile app before leaving for road conditions
  • Accelerate and brake gently
  • Use caution, especially on ramps, bridges, overpasses, hills and curves.
  • Allow snow plows right of way; keep plenty of distance behind other vehicles.
