Spot-LYTE Theater Group Ready for Spring Break Performances

Two separate productions on tap this week

If parents are wondering what to do with their children over Spring break, the Spot-LYTE Company has an artistic and affordable suggestion. The theater group will perform two shows for young people starting April 20.  The shows are Cinderalla, Cinderella, an interactive version of the well-known fairy tale and The Road to Forever, the story of children Liuba and Ilya who get swept away to the magic land of Forever. Cinderella is intended for younger children age three to seven and Forever is meant for elementary school and early middle school kids.

“I do it especially during Spring break because I know parents don’t know what to do,” said Caren Hearne, Performing Arts Program Specialist.

The Spot-LYTE Company is a pre-professional resident performing ensemble at the Workhouse Arts Center. As a rule, students in the company are between the ages of 16 and 20 and hope to pursue a career in the performing arts although there is one 13 year-old in the company.

Spot-LYTE auditions hopefuls every September and Hearne says she would like to see a bigger turnout this year.

“The more people that I have to choose from, that makes the company higher quality,” Hearne says.

As for the students in Spot-LYTE this year, Hearne says they are true artists and she treats them as such during both rehearsals and production.

Hearne says exposing students at this age to theater, both as performers and audience members, is an invaluable experience.

“It gives you so much more appreciation for the art form and it’s such a different process than TV or a movie,” Hearne says. “And the thinking process of an actor bridges the gap. You’re understanding the psychology of how people work.”

The actors in Spot-LYTE attend several different schools in the area, including South County Secondary School in Lorton. Cinderella, Cinderella will be performed on April 20 and 21 at 10 a.m. and April 22 and 23 at 1 p.m. The Road to Forever will play the same days, but in opposite time slots. Tickets are $5 and reservations are encouraged.  For more information, click here.
