Stallions 4-1 Thanks to 25-point Fourth Quarter

Marquice Johnson scores 10 of his 21 in final quarter as South County beats West Potomac

South County scored the first seven points of the game Tuesday night, setting the tone for a 73-61 win over the home-standing West Potomac Wolverines. The Stallions had three players in double figures.

"The team came out ready to play," said Stallions Junior Marqueice Johnson, who led all players in scoring with 21. "We knew that this would be a tough game but we came out with a game plan and we were able to get the win."

In addition to opening the game on a 7-0 run, the Stallions held the Wolverines scoreless for the first 2:29 of the game before they finally scored. South County continued its hot shooting and ended the first quarter with a 17-9 lead.

"We were beaten on the boards, offensive and defensive," said West Potomac Coach David Houston III, "I thought our initial defense was fairly solid but giving a good team second and third chances to score puts the team in a difficult position."

The second quarter went better for the Wolverines as they outscored the Stallions 20-19 to get the game within seven going into the half. Led by Senior Daryl Copeland, the Wolverines were able to get some turnovers and hit a few 3-pointers to head into the locker room only down 36-29.

"We started off good but then they started to come back," said South County Coach Wendell Johnson, "They were able to hit some key shots and that got them back into the game."

After getting down by 13 early in the second half, the Wolverines staged a 12-4 run to end the third quarter, slashing the lead to five points.

"After they took a early lead we kept battling and had it to 4 points with plenty of opportunities to make it a 1 possession game," Houston said. "I thought our pressure caused their guards problems and turnovers due to our speed and quickness at the guard position."

But that was as close as the Wolverines would get it, as turnovers plagued them in the fourth quarter.

"We didn't shoot that bad, but we didn't get enough shots due to turnovers, many unforced," Houston said. "They are a good team, and so keeping them off the glass wasn't easy."

The Stallions poured in 25 points in the fourth with Johnson taking, over scoring 10 of his 21 points leading his team to the 73-61 victory.

Besides Johnson's 21 two other Stallion players scored in double figures, as Senior Nik Biberaj added 10 points and eight boards and Junior Andrew Rector had 14.

South County returns home on Friday when they host Westfield.
