Local High School Students Display Art at Workhouse

The 2012 Congressional Art Exhibition is coming to the in Lorton.

The show is up now and runs through April 29. It features 162 pieces of art from 117 students in Fairfax and Prince William counties.

“There’s 162 works of art that are featured in the gallery, which is more than we’ve ever had,” said Andrea Cordray, a spokeswoman for the Workhouse Arts Center.” … We’re just very happy we can provide students a space to exhibit their work in a professional gallery.”

The public is invited to attend the reception and awards ceremony from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 28. The festivities will take place at the Workhouse Arts Center’s McGuire Woods Gallery, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton.

The Annual Congressional Art Competition is a touring exhibition of Virginia high school art. The Congressional Art Competition provides an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. More than 650,000 high school students have participated in the nationwide competition.  

The Workhouse pieces were sponsored by Congressman Gerry Connolly, D-Va.

“This annual contest provides a unique opportunity for young artists in Fairfax and Prince William to join with other students from across the nation to showcase their artistic creativity and talent,” Connolly said in a prepared statement. “It is my pleasure to host this competition for high school students in the 11th Congressional District and highlight the importance of the fine arts.”

A total of 55 students from Fairfax County will have their work exhibited, along with 62 students from Prince William County.
